The holidays are a time for fun and celebration. In our haste to make our homes more festive, we often ignore certain safety precautions and could be potentially putting our families in danger. Christmas trees and other decorations too often cause trouble when placed incorrectly near a heater. In an effort to keep all of our friends and family safe this season, we’ve put together our list of safety tips for holiday decorating.
-
Keep your tree at least three feet away from furnaces, heating vents, fire places, and space heaters.
-
Make sure your tree is well-watered, as dried out trees are much more likely to catch fire.
-
Do not place garland, decorations, wrapping paper, or even cardboard boxes on top of your furnace or radiator as they may be flammable.
-
Never plug a space heater into a power strip. It should always have its own outlet, so don’t plug into one that is also powering lights.
-
Never leave a portable heater unattended. Turn it off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
As you can tell from most of these tips, space heaters are known to be hazardous during the holiday season. We urge you to use them carefully, and don’t hesitate to give us a call if your HVAC unit isn’t providing all the heat you need. Don’t rely on a portable heater this holiday season.
